After 10 years of Red Alert 2 and Red Alert 2 - Yuri's Revenge I still could not find an application which will set the current screen resolution and save it in ra2.ini and ra2md.ini. The existing apps (google for them) either provided a list of incompatible display resolutions or just didn't work.
Problem solved. I created the app myself:
Installing and using the app
- Extract the archive contents;
- Find the directory where Red Alert 2 is installed and move "YuriScreenResolution.exe" in there;
- Right click "YuriScreenResolution.exe" and choose "Send to -> Desktop (create shortcut)";
- Rename the shortcut on Desktop to your liking, for example to "Red Alert 2";
- Now everytime you want to play, just double click the shortcut, and choose between Red Alert 2 and Red Alert 2 - Yuri's Revenge.
Playing over TCP/UDP
Along with the launch of Windows Vista in 2007, in order to play on the network, users had to install the IPX/SPX networking support manually. Following the launch of Windows 7 in 2010, IPX/SPX could no longer be installed, therefor Red Alert 2 could no longer be played on a network.
The problem can easily be fixed using "Scorpio9a's winsock.dll IPX over UDP wrapper". Just download the DLL (extract it from archive if in a zip) and place it in the game directory. Do the same for all the computers on the network who wish to play, and you'll have yourself a nice LAN party.
Scorpio9a's winsock.dll will also allow for over internet LAN play, through services like Tunngle or you very own VPN server.
I didn't include Scorpio9a's winsock.dll because of possible copyright infringement (I hope the author will allow it, until then...).
Fix game stuttering and slowdown
Using the latest game patches, after a while during network play, Red Alert 2 would start stuttering and slowdown. The problem can easily be fixed by setting VideoBackBuffer=no in ra2.ini and ra2md.ini.
Or, you can apply this fix automatically by using the "Resolution Fixer" app included in this post.
"***FATAL*** String Manager Failed to Initialize Properly"
This error can occur on Windows XP if you don't set the compatibility mode for YURI.exe to "Windows 98/Me" in the "Properties/Compatibility" tab.
If you don't how to do it (or the tab is missing), don't worry, this app will set the compatibility to "Windows 98/Me" automatically when launching the game.
"**FROZEN MENU SCREEN - FIX** (issues with Intel HD Graphics)"

It's that simple, was pulling my hair out for a long time over that one!"
(thanks to "Deanage" for leaving this comment)
"**FROZEN MENU SCREEN - FIX** (Windows 8 ddraw issues)"
Place ddraw.dll and aqrit.cfg from bitpatch.com/ddwrapper.html into the game folder. Change aqrit.cfg to:
RealDDrawPath = AUTO
BltMirror = 1
BltNoTearing = 1
ColorFix = 1
DisableHighDpiScaling = 1
FakeVsync = 1
FakeVsyncInterval = 0
ForceBltNoTearing = 1
ForceDirectDrawEmulation = 1
NoVideoMemory = 1
SingleProcAffinity = 1
ShowFPS = 1
If this fix didn't work, delete the created ddraw.dll and aqrit.cfg files.
See how the game looks like at widescreen resolution - 1680x1050 (see? no stretching!):
Thanks a lot for this makes me go back a few years for some wicked gaming and makes it look cool...
ReplyDeleteI'm getting a "Please insert the correct CD-ROM" message when I start yuri revenge through this. I suppose it's because I don't have the original game but a cracked one, but I really don't want to start the game with TFD DVD every time, so is there a workaround? TY!
ReplyDelete1st: BUY THE GAME. It's worth every penny. Red Alert 2 and Red Alert 2 - Yuri's Revenge on Amazon.
ReplyDelete2nd: Then use Alcohol 120% to create a backup ISO which you will then mount with Daemon Tools or Alcohol 120%. You will then won't need to have a physical CD-ROM. There are lots of tutorials on the net, on how to play games from backup ISO, instead of from CD-ROM.
Let me also add that some companies (ie Blizzard) have long realised that CD-ROM protection impedes sales, because pirates have more fun than customers (which might also get into complications with the protection preventing them from playing). To date, all CD-ROM protections have been overcome. There is no good reason why publishers should continue to use such obviously flawed method in everyones disadvantage.
thanks a lot for the YuriScreenResolution.exe

does yuriscreenresolution.exe works in windows 7???
ReplyDeleteYes. Not only it works on Windows 7, but it was originally developed on Windows 7.
ReplyDeleteand how because mine doesn't work, its still the same
ReplyDeletedoes it work in red alert 2 come from torrents?
ReplyDeletenevermind what i ask but thanks anyways , it works just in the game.. ^_^
ReplyDeleteIm still getting ***FATAL***String Manager failed to initialized properly. and i did all that you said I got windows 7 64bit
ReplyDeleteIt works for me on Windows 7 64 bit, but here's what you can do:
ReplyDeleteRight click YURI.exe,
click properties,
go to Compatibilities tab,
check Run in compatibility mode with Windows XP SP3,
click OK.
Right click YURI.exe and click Run as Administrator.
If it still doesn't work, I suggest turning off UAC (User Access Control) or reinstalling Windows...:(

Thanks for this you're awesome! But when after I go into "Network" and go back out of it by clicking "Back", it crashes back to desktop and I got to open it again. Is there a fix for this?
ReplyDeleteOh and on my Vista laptop this doesn't happen, same copy with same crack using your professional program :D, but on XP SP3 for some reason it crashes as I described above.. =\
ReplyDeleteUnderstorm winsock.dll IPX over UDP wrapper.
ReplyDeletePlace the DLL in your game folder, and try then (all your friends must using this wrapper DLL).
help me. i have play this before and its ok, no problem.
ReplyDeletebut just a few days i'll try to play again, the menu did not appear, its only appear when i push window button to get to the desktop and enter the game back
If reinstalling the game does not work, try reinstalling Windows. Sounds like a DirectDraw issue. Do you by any chance use a 64 bit OS (possibly Windows 7 or Vista) and have ddraw.dll in the game folder?
ReplyDeleteno, its win 7 32 bit and there are no ddraw.dll in the game folder.
ReplyDeletei have installed new win 7 on other partition(dual boot), and i tried to play but it still same. sorry for my bad english, thanx for the help
Update DirectX
ReplyDeleteUpdate your video card drivers (you are problably or Standard/Generic video driver or a limited/old driver). If there are drivers for you card for Windows 7, then I suggest downgrading to the supported OS. Have you tried playing on Windows XP?
If it worked before on Windows 7, and now on a fresh install it doesn't work, make sure you reinstall the game using the original setup program. Also, do not install any other software (including antivirus). Run the game first. If it works, some other software might be causing a conflict.
yes, it worked on win 7 bfore this. i'll try as what u said, or if it still do not work, i think i should format my computer and try to install the game.
ReplyDeletebtw THANKS SO MUCH for your help..
Ahh you misunderstood me, I mean AFTER I go in the Network, and I click the "Back" button, the GAME crashes to desktop.
ReplyDeleteOxygen thanks greatly again for this program, but could you please reply to what I said o.O?
ReplyDelete(btw thanks this is really needed you're the best)
I did understand, and please try what I said. There could be a problem when you unregister from the IPX network.
ReplyDeleteI've already done that like 2 weeks ago, but it still crashes out once I click on Back from the Network tab. I always play this game with my neighbors the problem isn't connecting to them or them to me, but the problem isn't even primary, it's just the game crashes when I click Back.
ReplyDeleteI know the problem isn't connecting. Using TCP/UDP/UDP Broadcast instead of IPX could have been a solution. Your easiest way out is reinstalling the game (patch to the latest version), and if that doesn't work, and your antivirus/firewall doesn't cause the game to crash on disconnect from network, it's really hard to tell what software could be causing the crash. Reinstall Windows, install the game, run it, if it works fine when disconnecting from network, then start installing stuff (antivirus/firewall, other software), and between each install test to see if the bug appears. This way you can identify the conflict...
ReplyDeleteIt isn't that big of a problem, it's okay anyway, thanks greatly for your help again oxygen. I hope the best for your programs and your site.
ReplyDeleteYou rock.
Err, excuse me oxygen, I know I've been a pain in the butt recently. I just wanted to state one more thing, Ra2 yuri's revenge's maximum resolution is 1024 * 768. I keep trying to edit it using your program and even from the file but it just won't change. I'd love if you would tell me what I have to do unless there's no possible solution.
ReplyDeleteThanks again for your patience oxygen!
Are you running the program from within the game folder?
ReplyDeleteI have a difficulty about the introduction of the game, I do not want to with someone on the network to play a passage and the come over the proposal getting ***FATAL***String Manager
ReplyDeleteThanks in advance and I apologize for the trouble I'll look forward to your reply
ReplyDeleteI installed the game red alert 2 and now I need a folder called westwood for chotby add there mental omega, and I do not know how can I download it all the more in the game that no folder = ((I need a folder westwood to throw back labels with mental omega .... Please if you can HELP ME!
ReplyDeleteI had to delete your comment because it did not make any sense. I tried to understand, but your english is a bit bad. Please try again.
ReplyDeletePlace the application in the game folder.
ReplyDeleteSet the resolution and click de play button.
The menus (Network, Options, etc.) will still be at 1024x768.
The game (after the loading screen, units, map, in game control menus) will be at the set resolution.
Have fun:)
Thanks a lot for this post.
ReplyDeleteI have been getting an error...every time I run the game please contact www.westwood.com 4 help n technical support I am using windows XP 2 anyhelp on this??
ReplyDeletethank you very much for this patch. i am attempting to play this on a 46" LCD in 1080P resolution, but the resolution does not change. can you please advise what the issue is? or does it NOT support 1080p? i have done all the required steps. i am using an Asus nettop with windows 7 ultimate 64bit and Nvidia Ion GPU.
ReplyDeleteThe resolution of the game menus does not change. Only after starting a game will you see the resolution you set with this program. Which is the case?

ReplyDeleteokay i got it to work, but after like 3 minutes of gameplay the game crashes. any solutions?
ReplyDeleteThis tool is amazing! Thank you so much for this! I can finally enjoy RA2 again on Win 7.
ReplyDeleteupdate the game to the latest version.
ReplyDeleteUntill installing this, I didnt have an issues with Yuri's revenge. Now when trying to play the game, I get "***FATAL*** String Manager Failed to Initialize Properly"
ReplyDeleteI tried different things, I keep getting FATAL error. Normal RA2 works fine
ReplyDeleteThank you for taking the time to make this and share it with the world. I still enjoy RA2 & YR - we play here on the LAN (6 'puters) and after upgrading three to Vista/ Win 7 was disappointed to find no IPX. Thanks to the solution you pointed out for that and your resolution fix we are good to go for and even better than the game designers made the game. AWESOME!
ReplyDeleteTry reinstalling the game and apply the newest patches.
ReplyDeleteYour very much welcome:)
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU !
ReplyDeleteJust click "Set game resolution" and "Fix slowdowns" buttons.
ReplyDeleteThen exit the application.
You do not need to run the game through this application. The resolution change and slowdown fix are permanent.
I am hoping you can help me... I have RA2 working perfectly on my Win 7 desktop with all the patches and such, however on my Win7 laptop when I click Network it just reloads the main menu.... its the same exact installation but everything i try doesn't seem to help.
ReplyDeleteAre you sure you copied the Understorm TCP/UDP winsock.dll patch into the correct game folder?
ReplyDeletethanks
ReplyDeleteThe same for me. "Network" button just reloads the main menu on Windows 7 x64.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, I have "wsock32.dll" in the game folder.
Well...I'm running Windows 7 64 on 2 machines, and they both work, and I do play with my brother.
ReplyDeleteAny other specifics? Antivirus, firewall? Do you have a normal network card? Do you have any virtual network cards (like for sniffers, vpns), PPoE/dial-up connections active or set as default?
Hey there Obelisk.
ReplyDeleteGot your app, works fine (i actually know what it did but never mind) but I still have a problem with Yuri.
Ra2 works just fine, yuri however looks very messed up no matter what images, it's like the lines are stretched diagonally and the whole menu isn't understandable.
Tried various fixes found around the internet and nothing worked.
Any ideas on how I can get Yuri's Revenge to show me a proper menu so that I can actually use the game?
awsome res emulator but it only works for RA and when i try 2 start YR it still will not set video mode i tryd all compmode options help!! i run win7 64b , 2x GF9800GTX , 8 GB ram , on a clockt E6500
ReplyDeleteReinstall Windows, the game from the original CD, and then apply latest game patch. Set the resolution.
ReplyDeleteAnd play:)
The resolution only changes in-game. The game menus will remain at 1024x768.
ReplyDeleteYou've got to be kidding me, reinstalling the game is one thing but Windows is too much of a pain.
ReplyDeleteAny workaround?
Thanks ! I'm so happy because it works on windows 7 starter (w/o CD-ROM) laptop, I wasn't expecting this! Thank you very much *again* ^_^
ReplyDeleteI am having an issue with the video that comes with both RA2 and Yuri. I'm also encountering issues with the menu - i can't see the options unless I alt-tab out to the desktop and alt-tab back in.
ReplyDeleteMy op system is Win 7, I have DirectX 11 (9 wont install as the installa, tion prog for Dx 9, says when run,I don;t need to update then shuts down), I've installed the update to 1.03 v4, followed the steps above (admin etc etc), and have uninstalled and reinstalled several times, and still to date I have issues with videos and menus.
Have I overlooked something? I notice on the forums other ppl have also had the same issue - hear the video can't see it, etc - but also see no solution offerred for this SO FAR ! lol
Can you or anyone help, and if so can we have a page dedicated to just that issue - as it appears to be a very common one, that is if there isn;t already a page yet (psst drop the link here btw ;) )
Thanks in advance
anyone tell me where i can download RA2 and yuri please
ReplyDeleteHi!
ReplyDeleteI hope someone can help us... We want to play RA2 over Hamachi, but we can't find us. :s
We have all the same version of RA2 and Hamachi and all have installed this "Understorm winsock.dll IPX over UDP wrapper"!!
I tried it in a local network (with a direct ethernet cable connection) and it works, but if we want to play it over Hamachi, we can't find any pc...
What can we do now?
Sorry for my bad english...
Simon
Hi man, I run RA 2 and YR and they have the same problem. There is no Command tab on the screen and the picture is very lag. I have win 7 and I copy your solution, but it not work.
ReplyDeleteThere is something wrong with your Windows installation. Make sure you download and install the video card drivers from nVidia/ATI/Intel websites. Also re-install the game from the original source.
ReplyDeletehey, i downloaded this and it worked while i had my win7 laptop pluggesd into my TV but it will not help while i'm not :S any suggestions to what may be causing this??
ReplyDeleteNo, sorry. Play with the multi monitor Windows 7 settings (by removing any extra screens), or through some configuration app provided by Intel/ATI/nVidia
ReplyDeleteI <3 U
ReplyDeletei love its new pixel details
ReplyDeletenot workig
ReplyDeleteHi, I am also having a problem like Blaze was having. Red Alert 2 screen freezes but there is audio in the background, and if I actually remember where all the buttons are, or if I constantly press start to exit to the desktop and then enter the game again (without restarting it, this also seems to refresh it to the screen it should be at, but is frozen at that screen) I can actually play the game fine, it is just all the menu settings that seem to be the problem, tried installing and uninstalling thousands of times, tried using downloaded versions via torrents, tried deleting any trace of RA2 from the registry. Have run it with minimum drivers and processes running at the same time to see if other programs were to blame, nothing seems to work, even downloaded your program to see if that could work for my problem, but sadly, to not avail. And it has worked before on my Windows 7. I read somewhere that someone had the same problem as me and all the did was change the computer acceleration, but for some reason the change setting for this is indented and I cannot select it, been through hours and hours of EA CS help, nothing seems to work, at my wits end :'( Please help!
ReplyDeleteThe easiest and least time consuming would be to reinstall Windows. Since you had it working on Windows 7 before you could also find the software/driver that's causing you all the trouble: try running the game after each software/driver installation to find the conflict.
ReplyDeleteI am using win 7 on dell notebook (ci 3).
ReplyDeleteTried almost every thing i.e. from changing the compatibility mode to win 98 / me and win xp.
Also tried your resolution fixer.
I installed RA 2 separately and then installed yuri revenge.
Got 2 main issues.
i. RA runs but no text is displayed in menus
ii. When run yuri (even through your fixer), screen goes blank for almost 30 seconds and control returns to desktop.
Pls. help.

ReplyDeleteGood evening ;)
ReplyDeleteI have played RA2 thanks to your patch. But, when I wanted to start with Yuri, I found problem with diplay resolution. I set yuri.exe comaptibility same as RA2, runed from your app and still getting error msg: Error - Unable to set the video mode.
It works only if I manuly change the resolution to 1024x768.. RA2 works like a charm, but yuri have some problems.. Can you help plz?
w7 64bit..
Remove any Windows compatibility setting then try running:
ReplyDelete-directly
-through the app
Shall I reinstall windows?
ReplyDeleteWill not only removing red alert and yuri revenge and then installing work??
worked perfectly
ReplyDeleteHey, thanks a bunch for this! Working perfectly for me! However, my father isn't so lucky and keeps getting prompted for the disk whenever he tries to launch, despite the fact it's in the drive/being recognised! Any clues? Thanks in advanced!
ReplyDeleteYes, look around on the internet for the original disc in ISO format, then mount it using Daemon Tools. It could be that the physical disk is damaged.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the patch, but it doesn't seem to work for me. I'm running Windows 7 64bit and in Red Alert 2 the game only takes up a small portion of the screen (though it does appear to be at a higher resolution). For Yuri's Revenge, there is no effect. Any ideas?
ReplyDeleteOk, so I'm an idiot for not playing around with it enough :P
ReplyDeleteAlthough the loading screen and menu do not look as though they have been adjusted, the game itself plays fine. Thanks so much!
http://www.obelisk.ro/apps/YuriScreenResolution.zip?attredirects=0
ReplyDeleteYuri works with that :)
Thx for the help! :)
help! im having the cant see a menu or video problem but can play the game issue. i tried youre resolution app but with no success. im running windows 7 64bit
ReplyDeleteThe game works fine on Windows 7 64, on various hardware platforms for many including myself and my friends (without any issues, tweaking or whatever fixes).
ReplyDeleteReinstall Windows 7, and right after the reinstall, install Red Alert/Yuri from the original installation media and update to the latest version.
It has to work.
thnx man it works great on 800 and 600.. Bcoz i dont see the resolution ..1680 and 1050... :D and once again thnx very much.. :D :D :D

ReplyDeleteTry buying it?
ReplyDeleteI'm using windows 7 x64bit....
ReplyDeletewhen i double click my red alert : yuri's revenge...
it's running but i can't see any words appear on my game.
how can i fix it?
if you have intel integrated hd graphics, thats probably your issue, and intel has not fixed this yet
ReplyDeletewhen i check my laptop, i have two graphic card. where intel integrated hd graphic (built in) and nvidia geforce GT520.
ReplyDeletei'm using acer aspire 4750G intel core i5-2410M
thanks for the reply.
Awesome... Just ******* awesome. Just used it. Ra2 is the best and at 1080p I feel like a cheater!!!
ReplyDeleteHei, I have the same problem, I am using windows 64 bits, don't have any directdraw in my folder. Have nvidia GT555? what can I do?
ReplyDeletehi .i have windows 7 (64b) on my laptop (hp probook 4530s)...i have tried everything but still it doesnt work.i can hear the sound.but cant c the vdo.and after some time when vdo appears ,i cant c the options :(...plz help
ReplyDeleteplus there is one more problem.my laptop is not giving this option (1680 x 1050) ...the maximum i have is 1366 x 768...shall appreciate ur earliest reply.
ReplyDeleteYou have 2 video cards. An Intel HD fo low power stuff and an ATI for more performance when needed (which gets activated only when needed).
ReplyDeleteOthers are having your problems too.
Try disabling the Intel HD discrete video card in the bios or device manager (this could cause Windows not to boot anymore, do it at your own risk). On HP laptops press A after F10 when entering BIOS to show a hidden menu where you can choose between iGPU (intel), dGPU (dedicated GPU) or hybrid.
The maximum resolution of your laptop's display is 1366 x 768:

HP ProBook 4430s:14.0-inch diagonal LED-backlit HD anti-glare (1366 x 768 resolution)
1680x1050 in this article is an example for widescreen in general.
Your program is amazing.
ReplyDeleteJust an idea, could you add the -SPEEDCONTROL command after each exe game to let us choose the speed campaign.
Il would be the perfect tool after that ...
Thanks a lot ...
Done.
ReplyDeleteFor me it works for Red Alert 2 - Yuri's Revenge, yet doesn't work for Red Alert 2 (even tried with a normal Windows shortcut). Nevertheless the app now calls both with -SPEEDCONTROL param.
Hey any updates coming up?
ReplyDeletethank you very much, you rock !!!
ReplyDeletehummm, where did you upload the new version ?
ReplyDeleteJust download it again from the article.
ReplyDeleteIt's already updated.
ReplyDeletethx !!!
ReplyDeleteSo i recently i downloaded this. It worked like a charm at first. Then a few hours later after restarting my computer it stopped working. Why is this?
ReplyDeleteHi, I have a problem, I bought a new laptop with W7 x64 and nvidia video card, when ra2 starts it appears in a form of a square, it shows the main stage of the program but without the right menu buttons. My resolution supports 1360 width, I've tried to run it with your resolution patch but no matter which I use it will always show in a square without the buttons. My last laptop was W7 x86 and ran perfectly, any ideas?
ReplyDeleteThanks in advance.
What stopped working? this app? you prolly have a virus and it corrupted applications in your computer.
ReplyDeleteYou have the 2 video cards issue, others with laptops are experiencing. There's no solution other than disabling the discrete video card. Do it risking having to reinstall Windows.
ReplyDeleteIt is an Intel driver bug (your laptop is not switching from the low power video card to the one for games (which supports directdraw and other stuff)).
too much settings to achive
ReplyDeleteHI, I have RA2 and YR, they r both downloads from a torrent site, RA2 works like a charm, while YR gives a strange screen pattern when I start the game, some resolution issue maybe, so I tried the patch, but it keeps askin me for a CD ROM, I have a virtual drive mounted using daemon tools, yet, it keeps askin me to insert CD ROM, any idea what to do ?
ReplyDeleteThanx
This game is dirt cheap, and is one of the best RTS in history.
ReplyDeleteWhy not buy it?

You also have a discrete Intel video card. Scroll down http://blog.obelisk.ro/2010/09/resolution-fix-for-red-alert-2-yuris.html#comment-347242476
ReplyDeleteThanks for your answer, the system has the option to shutdown nvidia card and use the intel video card, I tried that but it's the same, any other suggestion?, Thanks
ReplyDeletecuz its not available where I live and I dont want to wait 2-3 weeks shipping from online sites ! (I have many games , all original, I really dont need to steal :p )
ReplyDeleteso, any suggestions ?
Hard to believe. No suggestions.
ReplyDeleteHi, i've pasted wsock32.dll to thedirectory, but the problem is that when i click on network of the main menu on yuri's revenge............no lobby or anything appears, it just goes straight back to the main menu again. i remmmeber it worked once and i was ready to LAN with my brother and when i tried again nothing appears. Dont want to blame you, but last time the lobby appeared was right after when i got your miracle screen resolution fix working. So im unsure what the problem is
ReplyDeletewsock32.dll has nothing to do with the resolution fix "miracle".
ReplyDeleteDelete wsock32.dll to resume the previous game's behaviour of the LAN button.
If on Windows 7, you still not have any network, as Windows does not support IPX.
On Vista google for how to install IPX networking support.
On XP IPX may already be installed, or you need to check it on your network card.
Hey oxygen, i found out that in the network options, the destination network was not enough, so i tried entering in a socket number. Now, when i go back to main menu, and then clicked on network, it finally goes to the lobby, i created and works like a BEAUTY!!!!! it was a simple mistake, silly me................
ReplyDeleteOne more thing, i've played one game last night, with my brother and i had that slow down problems a couple of times, especially when we wanted to evade the enemy base, but my brother only had it at the beginning of game. The fixed resolution program says its already fixed, and i also checked that files is set as VideoBackBuffer=no in ra2.ini and ra2md.ini. I'm going to play another game soon, and see if it still has this problem, but so far im pretty dammm happy mate!!!!!.................
Maybe you dont get enough credit, but its not just the simple, user friendly programs you make that works, its the commitment and the help that you give to the public which amazes me!!!!
great work.............and LONG LIVE RED ALERT!!!!!!
Btw screen resolution fix works fine, and both our computers are windows 7 64 bit and we were using a ad HOC wireless network to play with each other. :) :)
woops.............. forget to add in, our red alert 2 - yuri's revenge is version 1.000
ReplyDeleteMake sure you don't have wireless latency issues or lack of bandwidth because of interference.
ReplyDeleteThe latest Yuri patch is 1.001, and the latest Red Alert 2 patch is 1.006.
Hey, this tool is awesome. Thanks so much for your hard work!
ReplyDeleteHMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
ReplyDeleteHi there, I've never actually donated cash to the beer fund of a developer before, but I've been wanting for ages to see some of my favourite old games beefed up to higher resolution, and Red Alert 2 is awesome. I just got a Dell U3011 and with your very professional app I can now play at 2560x1600 :D. I also got Quake going :) Alex
ReplyDeleteThanks, your donation is very much appreciated (also, you are the first ever, while this page has made 100 downloads a day for the last year).
ReplyDeleteNice to hear the game works at 2560x1600, I never got a chance to test it :)
Hi! I can't load saved games in yuri's revenge. Any help? thanks for the answer!
ReplyDeleteinstall the latest patch
ReplyDeleteI can't play it on network. When I click "Netowork", it go back to Main menu. I already put wsock32.dll file in the folder. Still can't do it.
ReplyDeletewhere did you obtain wsock32.dll from?
ReplyDeleteThe CDs are easy to get if you live in a big city or a in know countries, not like here in Portugal, I have not Yuri CD, it's broken and your application doesn't work for yuri only RA2.
ReplyDeleteMy game keeps minimizing, and i have no idea whats wrong.
ReplyDeletethanks for sharing this fix version
ReplyDeleteman, you'r great... it works for me... thnxxx a lot... yuri is my favorite game about 10 years...
ReplyDeletethis is not working.. and I just bought a new laptop and still trying to start and play RA2 but it is not working it shows black screen, even buttons are working but I cant see text buttons upon. plz help me out
ReplyDeletesorry i meant text upon buttons
ReplyDeleteI've tried using the app and it didn't work. The same thing keeps happening. The sound plays across a black screen, then the loading screen comes up fine but the menu doesn't appear. I tried all the resolution settings, I've tried turning off the UAC and I've changed the properties around countless times. Is there any other way I can get the game to play?
ReplyDeleteSome laptops (yours included) have 2 video cards, one is Intel, one is ATI or nVidia.
ReplyDeleteYour laptop is not switching to the gaming video card. This is a known issue with many old games on such laptops, please read the comments on this page.
You don't happen to be playing on a laptop which has 2 video cards (one Intel and one ATI)?
ReplyDeleteMany thanks to the developer! Me and my friends are having a great time in full screen.
ReplyDelete**FROZEN MENU SCREEN - FIX** (for those who are having issues with intel hd graphics) Go into your intel graphics options, in power management, select maximum performance! It's that simple, was pulling my hair out for a long time over that one!
One issue i need help with, network play is good in ra2 (apart from the odd disconnection), but every time we get a network game going on yuri's, after a certain amount of time, the connection is timed out, every game. Can you help at all?
I'm not great with computers, so please explain any possible fixes as simply as possible.
win7
Many thanks
The connection time out appears for all players, if a single player is timing out.
ReplyDeleteIt is possible only one of the players is actually having trouble.
To me it happens rarely (like every other 30rdyest game).
I'm assuming you are using the wsock32.dll TCP/IP wrapper from Understorm's website (you have this file in the game folder).
If any one of the players is on WiFi make sure he has good signal. Red Alert won't ever reconnect if the TCP will timeout.
If any one of the players is on wired LAN, make sure all cables are perfect at all ends (also it could be you have a cheater, which when losing, quickly disconnects and reconnects his network cable).
Make sure you have the latest game patch for all players:
The latest Yuri patch is 1.001, and the latest Red Alert 2 patch is 1.006.
I have a problem running RA2. In the intro movies, there is no video and
ReplyDelete> only sound. The menu buttons do not appear, unless the screen is
> manually refreshed by Alt+Tab and refocusing the window (a screenshot is

I also tried the resolution software, I tried every resolution, no succes, please help me!

ReplyDeleteHey Oxygen - first of all; BRILLIANT WORK. Very well done.
ReplyDeleteHowever, the menues and the cutscenes are all in smaller resolutions than in-game (1920*1080) in Yuri's Revenge.RA2 works like a charm, but the cutscenes and main menu in YR is forcing a smaller resolution.Got a solution?
Sorry, no.
ReplyDeleteI'll assume that you play under the same conditions then?
ReplyDeleteThanks for the quick answer, in a comment thread that has been inactive for over a year. You're the boss.
I'm playing at my monitor's native resolution 1680x1050.
ReplyDeleteI frankly don't care about the menus. The cutscenes I do care about, but since they were filmed in low res, the game not stretching them wins some quality.
thank's for your Effort but there is problem when i run the game there is massage opened ( ***FATAL***String Manager failed to initialized properly) & i do what you said befor about mood with windows 98 but it's not open (note : my windows 7)
ReplyDeleteI can't make any sense from " i do what you said befor about mood with windows 98 but it's not open".
ReplyDeleteTry running the game by clicking the game icon in "Resolution Fixer" application.
Im using YuriScreenResolution.exe but i still get the weird meny screen.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this post.
ReplyDeletePlease go through this article, this will add few more steps to the troubleshooting.

Thanks!!!
the screen freezes.. the sounds is running... I did every suggestion above but it still doesn't work.. what should I do next?
ReplyDeleteworks great , thank you. (im using w7 64 bits aswell)
ReplyDeleteIs there any disadvantage in setting VideoBackBuffer to "no"?
ReplyDeleteI've never experienced any problems with the default option.
or use NoCD-Crack. It works fine and you dont need to insert the CDs or ISOs.
ReplyDeleteThose worked for me:
RA2(1.006): http://cdn.naxpgaming.com/gbw/files/CommandAndConquerRedAlert2v1.006NoCDPatchEng.zip
Yuri(1.001): http://gf.wiretarget.com/yr/rpg-ra11.rar
Have fun!!!

i would llike to see your resolution fixer program but i got error pages from obelisk. could you please upload it again?(may be to different location)...
ReplyDeletetry again, it's hosted by Google.
ReplyDeleteThe problem is the one described in the article.
ReplyDeleteI don't see any reason to ask this question right after reading the answer (you would get the answer you just read).
still doesn't work for me.
ReplyDeletei've tried everything en stil don't see the movies and the menu's stay frozen.
i've read almost all comments.
my laptop got windows 7 64 bit and got C&C first decade pack.
anymore idea's?
All people with the problems you enumerated are on a laptop.
ReplyDeleteAll those laptops run 2 video cards, one Intel for non-demanding stuff, and another one for gaming.
Update all drivers and software for your laptop and follow these instructions too:

Help, everything I do is not working, i really miss this game, whenever I open the game the screen is frozen like a pic, I can still hear the sound and everything but its frozen, it only unfreezes when i press the windows button but when I open it back up it is frozen again, please help i really miss this game! And please break it down into small steps, thanks.
ReplyDeleteIf you are on a laptop, please read the bottom of the article, or the other comments with the same problem.
ReplyDeleteThanks!!!
ReplyDeleteAll your fix work fine!!!!
yuriscreenresolution.exe works!You save me
Try these:
ReplyDelete"FROZEN MENU BUTTONS FIX (issues with Intel HD Graphics)"
"Go into your Intel Graphics options, in power management, select maximum performance! It's that simple, was pulling my hair out for a long time over that one!" (thanks to "Deanage" for leaving this comment)
"FROZEN MENU BUTTONS FIX (issues with ATI or nVidia)"
This may happen in Windows Vista 64 bit, Windows 7 64 bit and Windows 8 64 bit. Open start menu (or on Windows 8 go to the Metro interface) and type "Power options". Click "Power options". Select "High performance".
"FROZEN MENU BUTTONS FIX (issues with ATI or nVidia)"
If the above solutions didn't help, you need to know what is causing this problem: your graphics card is not exiting idle mode, or you are on a laptop with 2 graphics cards and the graphics card driver is switching to the gaming one (because Red Alert 2 does not exceed improperly set treshold or some other video card specific cause like a faulty driver). I have studied the issue, I could not find an universal solution (I found only video card specific workarounds/hacks/fixes) and so you are on your own. Good luck.

I have updated the article with possible solutions for the frozen menu buttons.
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI did several times but no result.. I got also video and buttons problems and couldn't defeat yet with Lenovo z570(nvidia and intel graphics on it) a reload of file will be very nice
ReplyDeleteIf you honestly cannot, go to
ReplyDeletewww.gamecopyworld.com/ and find a no-cd patch. But if you can, please find a cd.
I'm on to a fix. Do the following (and do not question why):
ReplyDeleteInstall Logitech SetPoint.
Reboot if necessary.
When in the game menus, press caps lock to unlock de buttons animation and see the buttons.
when joining a multiplayer channel say to change it to 640X... .. not working for multi?
ReplyDeleteput i face aproblem that didnot work in the new processor sandy bridg!!!!! i dont know why,,,,,,, it laggg in one pic
ReplyDeleteIn online play (non LAN), a higher resolution is considered an unfair advantage.
ReplyDeletei have lenovo y570 and Win 7 64bit ultimate. But yuri app not working. Please help me.
ReplyDeleteTry to describe your problem, otherwise no one will understand something out of "not working".
ReplyDeletehi,
ReplyDeletethe game gives error after playing several minutes :S
how to fix ?? :S
Network game with Tunngle gives extreem slow down in gameplay
If game gives error, then use the fix.
ReplyDelete/sarcasm off
Hey love it but in the set game resolution on the launcher it still only has the default resolutions... any ideas?
ReplyDeletesorry figured it out, was trying to over compensate and running in win 98/me ... on vista 64 bit, flawless! thankyou
ReplyDeleteis there any method to copy the contents of the cd to folder and crack it ... with a patch so that no cd may be required ...
ReplyDeleteafter messing around trying to solve all the problems here is what i did and the results.
ReplyDelete1) compatibility mode - didnt work
2) Run As Administrator - didnt work
3) install MS virtual machine
4) Install XP mode from MS to run within MsVM - didnt work because MsVM does not support directx & it is limited to generic Video and Audio drivers. Max ram allocated to it is 265mb. - didnt work
5) Installed VMware in window7 - XP pro, sound and video drivers, installed Red Alert2 - Works.
time taken messing around - 1.5 days.
The mouse in VMware is a little jerky, however I have played Red Alert 2 & Yuri on VMware quite a lot, and its perfectly smooth (considering you have the proper hardware). Unlike you, I already knew VMware is the only one supporting DirectX :P
ReplyDeleteHi Oxygen,
ReplyDeleteWorks for Red Alert 2, but not for Red Alert 2 Yuri.
Yuri gives as respons: "Failed to initialize. Please reinstall."
Reinstalling didn't help.
Any suggestions?
(Working on a fresh install of Windows 7/64bit. Up-to-date and all drivers have been installed correctly.)
Did you install the latest patch?
ReplyDeleteYes, I'm using version 1.006 for RA2 and have installed the "latest" patch (dates 11/15/2001!) 1.001 for Yuri.
ReplyDeleteWhen launching Yuri, this app will set compatibility to Windows 98. Prolly this isn't working. Right click the Yuri.exe file, click properties and set compatilibility to Windows 98.
ReplyDeleteI set the compatibility to Windows 98 (also tried NT 4.0), but still the same error.
ReplyDeleteDo you have the original game files?
ReplyDeleteI have the discs somewhere around, I'm using the image files now, much easier to handle ;)
ReplyDeleteSend me an e-mail to oxygen@obelisk.ro

ReplyDeleteWhere did you obtain wsock32.dll from?
ReplyDeleteI know this thread is uber old, but it seems to be the most central place to talk about this.
ReplyDeleteI have a new laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit and a new GeForce 630M graphics card. When I try to run Red Alert 2 or Yuri's Revenge (Playing from Command & Conquer: The First Decade with latest unofficial 1.03 patch), the menu screen doesn't refresh correctly (the game hasn't frozen, I can click where the menu buttons should be and they respond correctly). This also affects cinematic, the in-game ESC menu and multi-player / skirmish screen.
The in-game battle screen seems completely unaffected. Menu dialogue boxes (such as the "Are you sure you want to quit?" confirmation) are also unaffected.I also noticed I could "update" the screen by using ALT+TAB, or using one of the laptop hot keys (which causes a graphical overlay). The missions work fine, I just need to find out how to get the menus to work again. :(Things already tried:- Compatibility Mode (XP SP3)- Compatibility Mode (98/Me)- Run as administrator.- Enable and disable VideoBackBuffer in RA2MD.ini.- YuriScreenResolution.exe- Setting ownership of the game folder to Everyone.- Download DX8 and 9 redistributables.- Force nVidia Optimus to use the Intel graphics card.- Force nVidia Optimus to use the GeForce discrete graphics card.- Force nVidia Optimus out of "adaptive power save mode".- Force the game into all available resolutions. From what I've seen it appears the graphics card doesn't seem to realise it needs to refresh screen while at the main menu, and only when an external event takes place (such as an ALT-Tab or hot-key overlay), does it wake up and redraw the scene.I'm at my wits end as to how to fix this... loved Yuri's Revenge so much back in the day and would love to be able to play again.Anyone got any suggestions more that I could try?
Also forgot to say that I tried adding anti-virus exceptions for the entire RA2 folder, and the five executables (RA2.exe, RA2MD.exe, game.exe, gamemd.exe and yuri.exe).
